Meta Tags That Matter
<meta name=”keywords” content=”your keywords go here“/>
<meta name=”description” content=”your descrtiption goes here“/>
<title>your title goes here</title>
So, which tags matter?
This is a tough one! So many SEO experts have different opinions on this. Some will say that meta tags don’t have the importance that they had at one time… many will say that meta tags are very important… others will say that using meta tags are a complete waste of time.
My opinion: Why not use them? What could it really hurt?
Now let’s break each meta tag down in order of importance:
- Title tag: This is the most important meta tag for SEO purposes. This is the tag that appears as a clickable link in the search engines. And, it’s the most important tag for that reason. Tip: Always use your keywords in your title tag. The likely hood of your link being clicked in the organic search will increase when you use keywords in your title tag.
- Description tag: This is the blurb that appears just below your listing in the search engines. Focus on writing a persuasive description and your click throughs will increase.
- Keyword tag: This is the most overused tag and the least important. Ther was a time that the keyword tage held more relevance. But, just like always, webmasters started using too many keywords which appears spammy to search engine spiders. However, it’s still a good idea to take advantage of your keyword tag. Just don’t get out of control. Limit your keywords to 5 to 10 phrases.

Quick Tip: Longtail Keyword Relevance
Using long tailed key term strings is a great way to direct more targeted traffic. However, it’s important to keep your key terms under 28 characters. Anything more will cause a significant decrease with your click through rates (CTR).

In a different post I will expand on this list. Now, let’s move on to what this post is about…
Making Your Pages More Specific
When it comes to on-site SEO, nothing is more important than content that’s focused specifically on keywords. However, It’s very important that you understand that you should never sacrifice the readership of your content by centering all of your writing around over usage of keywords.
A great way to avoid this from happening is to separate your keyword content into main key topics. Example: If you are blogging about Golf and your keywords are:
- Golf shoes
- Golf clubs
- Gold balls
It would make the readers experience much more pleasant if each keyword was addressed individually, in it’s own post… on it’s own separate page. When you take this approach, search engine spiders will notice it when crawling your pages… eventually you will start getting indexed higher in the search engines.
Fact: Each of the major search engines like content that provides quality user experience to search engine visitors.
